4 Books for A Healthier Marriage

If you’ve read any of my Instagram captions or checked out my website, you know that I care more about marriages than weddings. Yes, I love weddings. I love photographing them, dancing during the reception, eating cake, and celebrating with people I care about as they commit to forever! I was planning on posting this later in the year, but with everyone being in quarantine right now due to the coronavirus, I thought it was the perfect time to share all these with you. We all have more time to be at home and read, plan weddings, and spend time with our loved ones.

The best part? You don’t have to wait until you’re married to read them! In fact, I recommend reading them before you get married. Starting off your marriage in a healthy way is so much easier than trying to change once you’re already in it and have your rhythms established. There are definitely tons more awesome books and resources out there! These are just my absolute favorites! Of course, I linked them all for you to easily get your hands on ASAP!

Meaning of Marriage (+ devotional) by Timothy Keller

I mean, this is a homerun. If I had to pick only one book for this list, it would be this one. And I actually think it’s best to read this book as a single person! It helps you understand what marriage really is, which can make dating a lot easier! It walks through a ton of information and just sets up what marriage is all about. I’ve read it as a single person, fiancé, and wife. Each time I learn something new! If you are already married and reading it with your spouse, I recommend checking out the devotional that goes along with it. Do yourself and your marriage a favor and go open a new tab, buy this book, then come back and finish reading this post.

Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey

Finances are one of the top struggles for married couples. Having a strong financial foundation takes a looooot of strain off your marriage. Being on the same page about money really matters. Agreeing on your priorities and making sure you are being wise will lead to a healthier marriage. This book isn’t even about marriage, it’s just about money! But man oh man will it help your marriage be stronger!

The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman

I’m sure many of you have already heard of this one! It is pretty popular, and for good reason! Gary Chapman sets up this concept of ‘love languages,’ which are ways each person naturally gives and wants to receive love. More often than not, you and your spouse are not the same! Understanding how to love your spouse the way they want to be loved will equip you to have a healthier marriage. Daniel and I also love it because it gives us a common language to use around the hose when we are talking to one another. There is a version of this book for marrieds, singles, kids, teenagers, and more!

You + Me Forever by Francis & Lisa Chan

This is the shortest of all the books I have recommended! This is probably the only one that I think is better read after you’re married. I really love it because it’s written by a husband and wife together! They talk about viewing marriage in light of eternity. They drill down to true importance and significance of marriage…how to have a marriage that fulfills the deepest need of your soul. It’s easy to read with your spouse too!

There are lots of other fantastic books out there! Have you read something that deeply impacted your marriage?? I would love hear what it is! Comment below or on my post on Instagram to let me know. Help me expand my reading list!
